Las Aletas, or "the Little Wings", was formed in 1964 as an Auxiliary of the Assistance League® of Santa Barbara. Members of Las Aletas volunteer their time and talents to serve the greater Santa Barbara community.
Serving the Santa Barbara community since 1989, Kids on the Block® explores a wide range of important social issues through puppet presentations to school aged children. Las Aletas volunteers, using 3-foot-tall puppets, perform at local pre-school and elementary schools using carefully developed scripts to educate and engage young audiences. This unique program fosters discussions about issues such as name-calling, bullying, divorce, safety, and accepting people's differences.
Providing reading opportunities to homebound individuals in our community since 1976, Las Aletas members deliver books, DVDs and audio books to patrons who otherwise have no access to library services. Patrons are referred by both Las Aletas and Chapter members, the Goleta Public Library staff, local assisted living directors and the community at large. In support of this needed service and in recognition of its importance to our community, the Assistance League® of Santa Barbara supports Operation Bookshelf with an annual donation to the Goleta Public Library. Funding supports the purchase of large-print books and expanding library resources.
Serving the Goleta Union School District and Head Start program, Las Aletas' Operation School Bell® provides new clothing, books, backpacks, school supplies, toiletries and PayLess shoe vouchers to needy children. Referred by school liaisons and social workers, our services help children arrive in the classroom with improved self-esteem and better prepared to succeed. Started in 1979 and located in a bungalow behind the Goleta Valley Community Center, Las Aletas' Operation School Bell® outfits more than 600 local children each year .
Las Aletas membership meetings are held on the 3rd Tuesday evening of the month and interested individuals can join throughout the year. Annual membership dues are $88 and staffing the Assistance League Thrift Shop twice per month satisfies all membership fundraising requirements. Please contact us if you'd like to attend our next monthly meeting.
Throughout the year, Las Aletas members participate in social events, providing opportunities to meet new people and cultivate lasting friendships. Relationships formed among our members enable Las Aletas to maintain a strong commitment to each other, our philanthropic programs and to our community.
